What CEDIA 2019 Showed Us About Home Theater Design
8K TVs and Voice Control Stole the Show
The CEDIA Expo is when many consumer electronics brands unveil their latest and greatest products, and this year’s show in Denver was no different. When it comes to home theaters, there were two hot topics: 8K TVs and the expansion of voice control.
If you’re going to incorporate either of these technologies into your home theater design, you need to know a little about them. Today’s blog will give you a basic familiarity with what these devices can do and how they can improve your Nashville home.

THE 8K RESOLUTION REVOLUTION
Until recently, 4K was the premium product for home theaters. But a few 8K TVs are now available, and they’ve made a strong impression. An 8K display has a resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 pixels, twice that of the 3,840 x 2,160 resolution you’ll find with 4K models. Twice the resolution doesn’t mean the image is twice as good as 4, but it’s still a substantial improvement.
The main argument against buying an 8K TV now is the same one against buying a 4K TV a few years ago: A lack of content. While 4K movies and streaming content are easy to find now, it took time for that content to arrive at the outset. However, just like with 4K, 8K displays will upscale content meaning they’ll make even high-definition video look better.
Additionally, buying an 8K display helps future-proof your existing installation, putting you ahead of the curve. If you’re looking to purchase an 8K TV, Sony, Samsung and LG all presented superb models at CEDIA. Imagine watching a movie in 8K on Sony’s 98” Z9G MASTER Series TV.
EVEN MORE VOICE CONTROL
As voice control becomes more ubiquitous in our lives, prepare for more voice control in your home theater. One example is LG’s Alexa-enabled TV, the ThinQ AI. LG designed the ThinQ AI to employ multiple learning techniques that produce drastic improvements in how you use voice control. For example, “conversational voice recognition” features enable devices to understand questions and commands more contextually, so you won’t have to repeat yourself.
The ThinQ AI’s Magic Remote, powered by Amazon, can help you set routines for other home automation systems through your TV! Other features include the ability to instantly change the channel, set alarms and ask questions using just your voice.
