Building a Home Theater? Your Guide to Tiered, Elevated Seating

Bring Multiple Levels to Your Home Cinema

When you walk into most movie theaters, you’ll find yourself either looking up or down at many levels of seating. And wherever you sit, from the front to the back, the elevation means no one can obscure your view—even if they’re wearing a tall hat!

The same can be true for your home theater. If you plan on installing more than one row of theater seating, an elevated platform is essential for comfortable viewing.

As a home theater designer in the Brentwood, TN area, we install platforms that rival any commercial theater. Learn more about seating risers and platforms to see if you’d benefit from them in your home cinema!

Do You Need Elevated Seating?

Before choosing a screen, you need to think about where the seats will go. If you’re only going to need one row of seats, then generally, you do not need elevated seating. But with more than one row, a raised platform will improve the sightline for whoever’s sitting in the second or third row.

Leave Enough Space

Once you’ve determined where seating will go, you can decide the screen’s dimensions. It’s important not to overwhelm viewers in the front row. If the screen takes up too much of your field of view, it can cause motion sickness, headaches, and even vertigo.

It’s also important to think about the depth of each platform level. You’ll need space for guests to walk past seats and move about the theater. Risers, or platforms, should be at least six feet deep to allow people to walk in front of footrests. If you have the space, seven feet is even better. And if you aren’t installing recliner seats, a shallower depth is possible.

Professional vs. DIY Installation

While some homeowners are determined to DIY their home theater, things get a bit more complicated when you’re elevating the floor. Risers require some skill and planning to permanently attach to the floor. DIY risers are often hollow, causing shaking and vibrations while the subwoofer plays during a movie. A professional can install dense, sturdy, and perfectly measured platforms to create stadium seating in your home cinema.

Great for Media Rooms, Too

Even if you aren’t planning to build a traditional home theater, media rooms can benefit from a raised floor. Imagine an elevated ‘back row’ at the rear of the room where you can place casual seating or a bar. The two levels will make the space more versatile and inspire your friends and family to use the room for more than watching movies.
